Many families have concerns about autistic children struggling to transition away from preferred items such as electronics, toys, and family members. Skill-Based Treatment works to teach children to communicate their needs to others, tolerate hearing "no," and to transition to less-preferred activities.
This service involves sessions in clients' homes to first identify what "triggers" are involved in concerning behavior such as screaming, tantrums, and aggression. I then work with caregivers to teach children to tolerate transitioning from their favorite things to other, less-fun activities such as learning areas, chores, or self-care tasks.
Work focuses on "bringing the joy." Clients are given access to their many of their favorite things - all at the same time! For most kids, this includes time with family members- but on the child's terms.
(Basically, we work on getting your kids off of the iPad)
We provide once or twice-weekly parent/caregiver training sessions for those who care for an autistic child between the ages of 3-13. Training focuses on teaching children effective communication and coping skills. This is done as a means of preventing concerning behaviors before they appear. Trainings also focus on teaching parents the basics of behavior and how adults can support and encourage skills that are in line with their and their child's values. These offerings are ideal for those who care for children who have recently received a diagnosis of ASD.
